Local Gundam

Local Gundam is a project for Streetopia 2023 in Observatory. You can find it at the corner of Trill and Lower Main Road outside the Taproom. You may be standing there right now looking at this on your phone. It features a local version of a Japanese Gundam robot, or mecha, made from found materials by MacGyver, a street artist who sells his work near De Waal Park in Cape Town. African Robots commissioned him to make it based on a Gunpla kit model bought in Dublin. You can read more about African Robots on this site. We’ve worked in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Brazil and South Korea, bringing together a range of media and influences to make cross-cultural interactive electronic and science-fiction-based artwork in collaboration with street artists and crafters, vernacular makers, digital artists, engineers and musicians.
